Abstract -

Recent developments in machine translation technologies, together with the rigorous nature of Japanese legislative draftsmanship, make it feasible to design and build systems that aid in the translation of Japanese law into English. A multidisciplinary team from the Graduate School of Information Science and from the Center for Asian Legal Exchange at Nagoya University, Japan, will present the basic machine-translation techniques and preliminary research that form the foundation for the project, as well as describing some of the unique features of Japanese law creation that support the process.

Bio -

Katsuhiko Toyama and Yasuhiro Ogawa are members of the Graduate Faculty of Information Science at Nagoya University, Japan (http://www.inagaki.nuie.nagoya-u.ac.jp/index_e.html). They have worked extensively in morphological analysis and machine translation, most recently on representation and translation of Japanese legislation, on Bilingual KWIC, a GUI-assisted system for selecting among machine-derived translations, and on Japanese-Uighur translation. Takehiro Ohya is a legal philosopher on the faculty of the Center for Asian Legal Exchange at Nagoya(http://cale.nomolog.nagoya-u.ac.jp/en/). Frank Bennett is a legal comparativist working in the area of Japanese private law at CALE; he also speaks Zope.
