 Information Science Colloquium
From Libraries to Learning
Speaker: Tammy Sumner, Assistant Professor, Center for Lifelong Learning and Design, the University of Colorado at Boulder Date: Wednesday, October 3; 4:00p - 5:00p Location: 5130 Upson Note: 3:45 - 4:00p will be our reception, in the 5th Floor Upson Lounge. Following the talk, the reception will continue from 5:00 - 5:15p.

Abstract:
Cognitive research indicates students bring preconceptions about how the world works to every learning situation, and that these initial understandings must be explicitly targeted as part of an effective instructional process. While cognitive research has repeatedly demonstrated positive learning outcomes when instruction is tailored to the needs of individual learners, education research has shown that there are huge individual differences in teachers’ ability to modify instruction based on current student understandings. Our research is investigating is how to support teachers to customize classroom instruction to meet the individual learning needs of increasingly diverse student populations while ensuring that appropriate learning goals, and national and state standards are being met. This tension between supporting customization while supporting standards is further complicated by the challenges of scale, particularly in large urban school districts. The From Libraries to Learning program is combining advances in learning theory with scalable digital library technologies, developed in partnership with the National Science Digital Library, to develop technology infrastructure, software tools, and professional development processes to support scalable curriculum customization, while still ensuring curricular coherence. In this talk, depending upon the time and the interests of the audience, I will:
  • Present the conceptual framework we are using to guide the development of content-rich, adaptable, and adaptive learning environments powered by digital libraries.
  • Describe concrete examples of this infrastructure, such as the Strand Map Service, which offers a programmatic web service protocol that can be used within learning environments and library interfaces to dynamically generate concept-browsing interfaces which take on the look, feel, and brand of the learning environment or library where they are deployed.
  • Discuss some of our research activities which are investigating how machine learning and natural language processing techniques can be employed to personalize learners’ interactions with digital content based on their current conceptual understandings.
Bio:

Tamara Sumner is Executive Director of DLS. She is responsible for leadership of the institute, strategy development, and the conduct of our research program. Sumner is also an Associate Professor at the

University of Colorado, with a joint appointment between the Institute of Cognitive Science and the Department of Computer Science. She has significant experience in the theory, design, and evaluation of interactive learning environments, human-centered systems, digital libraries, and intelligent information systems. Since 2000, she has published over 50 articles on these topics.
