College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Information Science Major

1. Direct admission as a CALS pre-frosh

In order to be admitted to CALS-IS as an incoming freshman, potential students should visit the CALS undergraduate admissions page. Applicants will need to apply for admission to the Information Science major within their application to CALS. Students who are admitted directly to CALS as Information Science majors will be contacted by the Office of Counseling and Advising.

CALS students who intend to change their major to Information Science, or add it as a second major, should:

3. Internal transfer from another Cornell college to CALS - IS

Non-CALS students who want to transfer from another college at Cornell in order to major in Information Science in CALS should contact the Internal Transfer Division in Day Hall. They should also:

Note: If you have not taken the necessary qualifying courses for admission to IS, you may be able to transfer to the college as an Interdisciplinary Studies student, however this arrangement would need to be worked out with the college admission and advising offices.

4. External transfer from an institution outside of Cornell

Students who wish to transfer from another insitution to the CALS-IS major at Cornell should:
  • Apply directly to the University by visiting the Cornell Admissions website, and follow the directions for applying to Cornell as a transfer student.
  • Have completed biology 1 and 2, calculus 1, statistics 1, linear algebra, computer science (should be a course in computer programming), microeconomics, and cognitive psychology or cognitive science.
  • Complete all affiliation forms and submit them to 303 Upson Hall in order to apply for affiliation with the IS major.

Note: Admission to the Information Science major in CALS is highly competitive and only highly qualified candidates will be seriously considered.
