Mimi Recker

Mimi Recker is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Instructional Technology at Utah State University. The University of Utah’s Instructional Technology website defines this discipline as “a systematic way of designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the processes of learning and teaching with specific objectives based on research in human learning and communication.” View the USU Instructional Technology website for more details.

In addition to her work as an Associate Professor of Instructional Technology, Mimi has established and managed a Multimedia and Learning Technologies Centre at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. This university wide facility is dedicated to the use of new digital technologies in teaching and research.

She has also worked for many years in the area of information technology and education consulting. For the past 10 years, she has been working with the Trustee for 2020 Communications Trust, a charitable trust committed to the exploration of ideas, knowledge, and technology in new media. NetDay, a community project dedicated to the development of technological applications for educational use in primary schools, is a key project of this trust. She also serves as a consultant in a variety of other areas including Internet and World-Wide Web development projects, multimedia training systems, educational technology, and community-access information systems.

Her research interests include the design and evaluation of interactive learning environments, educational uses of new media, information and communication technologies, human-computer interaction, and models of multimedia information access.

Her published research covers topics such as, “Supporting ‘word-of mouth’ social networks via collaborative information filtering”, “Cognitive media for multimedia information access”, and “Collaborative information filtering: A review and an educational application” among many others.

Mimi received a B.A. in Computer Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
